Here are some of the leading ways that employees are injured on the job

Spinal Injuries - According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, spinal injuries are the most common workplace casualty. More than one million workers suffer injuries to the spine each year, with back injuries accounting for one out of every five. Around 25 percent of all compensation indemnity claims result from back injuries, and 75 percent of workplace back injuries occur during lifting and placing.

Traffic Accidents - Motor vehicle crashes on the job cost businesses an average of $19,844 per year in employee benefits and workers' comp costs, and the average cost per accident is $4,167. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released figures showing that, while job-related deaths dropped sharply from 1989 to 1994, traffic accidents and homicides were the leading causes of workplace fatalities.

Violence in the Workplace - According to U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics, an estimated 50 percent of American businesses reported having at least one violent workplace incident, and the average violence-related workers' comp claim is more than $20,000. One-fourth of workplace assaults is perpetrated by co-workers, and there are as many unreported cases of workplace assaults, threats, harassment and the like.

Slips, trips and falls – These account for about one out of every five injuries in the workplace-despite being among the most preventable injuries

Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD), Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Repetitive Motion Injury (RMI) - Carpal tunnel syndrome and other work-related upper extremity disorders are increasing. They make up a large share of the costs for occupational illness: more than $2 billion per year in workers' compensation costs alone. A combination of work organization, psychosocial factors, and ergonomic factors contribute to these disorders. Excessive keyboard force may contribute to the severity of hand and wrist symptoms. Even symptom-free workers hit the keys too hard--four or five times harder than necessary. Researchers led by Michael Feuerstein, Ph.D., Bethesda, Md., measured keyboarding force and speed in 48 word processing workers. Workers with symptoms commonly associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, such as pain, stiffness, tingling, and numbness hit the keys harder than the symptom-free workers, but both groups used more force than necessary. Keyboard force was unrelated to speed. It might be helpful to test workers' keyboarding style and try to reduce excessive force, the study reported.
